Kyneton and District offers services and activities for children, infants and their families at a level far in excess of the average country town of 5000 people or for that matter many metropolitan suburbs.

Kyneton has its own hospital (built in 2001), 4 GP clinics, a Specialist Centre, a Community Health Centre, dental surgery, optometrist and a Maternal and Child Health Centre.

Childcare, family day care and occasional childcare are offered within the town.

Kyneton offers extensive playgroup sessions, a Toy Library and eleven playgrounds.

Lady Brooks Kindergarten provides sessions for both 3 and 4 year olds.

Well regarded State and private schools – 2 secondary and 5 primary serve the district and a broad range of sporting, leisure and artistic activities are available.


The Hospital (Kyneton District Heath Service) and Childbirth

The hospital’s midwives and obstetrician guide parents through pregnancy, birth and beyond with a tailored home care program.

Antenatal clinics are conducted and there are bimonthly childbirth and breastfeeding classes which partners or friends are encouraged to attend with expecting mothers.


Maternal & Child Health Centre

The Centre’s nurses provide free care and advice to families of children aged 0-6 years. All nurses are registered with the Nurses Board of Victoria as general nurses, midwives and maternal & child health nurses.

Mothers are encouraged to visit the Centre where the nurse will review their child’s health, discuss parenting issues and talk to each mother about her own health and how the experience with her baby has been so far.

The Service offers information to support mother and family such as child health and development, immunisation, and support with breastfeeding. The Service also provides parent groups for first time parents, home visits, and referrals if necessary.

There is a schedule of minimum visits but the nurse is also available for additional consultations if required. The schedule of minimum visits is: home visit followed by appointments at the Centre when your child is 2 weeks, 4weeks, 8weeks, 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months, 2 years and 3.5years.




The Shire Council’s Health Officers provide infant, child and adult immunisations on a monthly basis. The immunisation venue is Kyneton Town Hall at129 Mollison St. A timetable of sessions and the recommended schedule is on .

The vaccination program for years 7 and 10 students is also organised by the Council through sessions conducted at the Secondary Colleges.



Long Day Care

Goodstart is a 3 room centre consisting of a nursery (0-2 years old), toddlers room (2-3years) and Kinder room (3-5years). Each room has its own playground.


Childcare Programs at the Kyneton Community & Learning Centre

Kiddy Capers for 3 year olds arestructured pre-kinder sessions that assist children with developing skills and independence in a supportive small group setting. Available Tues, Wed & Thur afternoons.

Occasional Child Care Sessions provide an opportunity for parents to take some time out for themselves while allowing children to enjoy the quality care provided in our licensed child care programs. Mon to Thur mornings.


Family Day Care

Sunbury and Macedon Ranges Family Day Care

A fully accredited childcare service for children 0-12 years of age, childcare is in small groups in the homes of carefully selected home based childcare providers.

This service formerly conducted by Cobaw Community Health was amalgamated with the Sunbury service at the start of 2012. Enquiries Robyn Byrne 97444455


Early Interventionis provided by Cobaw Community Health ph 54211666.

The program is for 0-6 year olds with a developmental delay and/or disability in 2 or more developmental areas. The Cobaw Early Childhood Intervention Program is staffed by a multidisciplinary team including a Coordinator, Speech Pathologist, Physiotherapist, Educational Advisor, Occupational Therapist and Program Assistant. The Early Childhood Intervention Team works within a family centred framework to identify needs and develop individualised intervention and support programs.



Kyneton Playgroup operates during school terms at the Uniting Church Hall in Ebden St.

Toy Library

The Kyneton Toy Library located at the Maternal & Child Health Centre 3 Hutton St, Kyneton is a wonderful resource for families with young children. $25 per year allows families to borrow 2 toys and 2 puzzles per fortnight; $30 per year 4 of each. Both of these memberships involve one duty per term. No duty is required for the $25 grandparents or $60 non-duty memberships.

The Toy Library also has a loan kit for functions where young children are expected.

Bug-a-Lugs –Indoor play Centre

While kids play on the jumping castle, triple slide, giant mushroom, climbing etc parents can enjoy a cup of coffee or they can play with the kids. Entry children is $7 - adults and children under 1 year are free. Group bookings are available.


Parent Buddy Program

Volunteers visit families with pre-schoolers to offer practical support or just visit for a coffee. For enquiries from families or potential volunteers wishing to be involved in this program call Linda Lynch at Cobaw Community Health 54211631.



Lady Brooks Kindergarten 5 Hutton St Kyneton ph 54222517

The Lady Brooks Kindergarten offers pre-school education for children of both 4-5 year and 3-4 years.

Enrolment forms can be downloaded from or can be obtained from and lodged at the Shire Offices at 129 Mollison St. Enrolment forms can also be returned by mail (PO Box 151 Kyneton, 3444).

In 2011 deadline for lodging enrolment forms for 2012 was June 30.

There are many locations in and around Kyneton where public children’s play equipment is located.


Jean Haynes Park – Located on the corner of High and Edgecombe Streets adjacent to the Visitor’s Information Centre. This popular well shaded playground is fenced and has swings, climbing and children’s adventure equipment, a train and slides. It has adequate seating, a free public barbeque and toilets nearby.


Mechanics Reserve Playground – Located in Baynton St next to the Library and across from Woolworths. This very popular fenced playground is ideally placed for a break with the kids during shopping. A toilet block with baby change area is nearby.


Bluestone Rise Playground – This modern fenced playground is situated in Jessie Evelyn Drive in the Bluestone Rise Estate. It contains swings, slide, & adventure style play equipment.

Kyneton Botanical Gardens – Located cnr Mollison & Clowes Sts, the gardens contain just two children’s swings, seating, free barbeque and public toilets.


Bottom Oval Playground – Located in Mair Street adjacent to the second oval at the Showgrounds. The playground is currently not fenced, is grassed and contains swings, slide, low monkey bars, climbing equipment and sandpit

Campaspe Views Playground – This modern playground is situated on the corner of Village Green Drive and Bolton Reserve Lane in the new Campaspe Views Estate. It contains swings, slide, & adventure style play equipment.

 Seating is provided nearby.

Kyneton Mineral Springs and Reserve - Located on the Old Calder Highway at the Lauriston turn off. This attractive area has extensive play equipment in a well developed picnic area which includes toilets, free electric barbeque, seating and tables, is very well shaded and has mineral water to pump.


Carlsruhe Common Playground

This recently completed playground is on the attractive Carlsruhe Common in Nicholson St Carlsruhe. Seating is adjacent to the playground and free electric barbeque with tables and seats is placed 50m from the playground.


Lauriston Reservoir – Located at Reservoir Rd Lauriston, the Reservoir has a well developed picnic area, play equipment and barbeque facilities.


Malmsbury Botanic Gardens – Wonderful picnic setting with central lake, facilities in barbeque, play equipment, toilets and shaded seating and tables.


Tylden Reserve – Located next to the Tylden Hall on the Tylden-Trentham Road. Playground has swings, climbing equipment, slide, monkey bars with an excellent covered barbeque area with associated tables and seating and toilets nearby.


Kyneton Community Park

A Committee has been formed to bring about the construction of a first class modern family friendly playground in Kyneton. The Council has approved the location in the Kyneton Botanical Gardens and work has started on the plans and on fund-raising.  Contact is Katrina Dernelley 54227380.


Children’s Clothing

Kyneton has two specialist children’s wear shops Tilly and Bella at 27 High St and Hennie & Fox at 66 Piper St. Best and Less also stocks a wide range of children’s clothing.

Children’s Storytime

This free activity for 2 to 5 year olds is held in the Kyneton Library at 11am each Friday. No booking is required–parents simply bring their children into the Library.


The schools in Kyneton and District are well regarded.

Within the township there are 2 primary schools - Kyneton Primary School ( ph 54221855) and Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School ( ph 54222056 ) and 2 Secondary Colleges – Kyneton Secondary College ( ph 54211100) and Sacred Heart College ( ph 54211200)

Primary Schools are also situated at Langley ( ph 54234125), Malmsbury ( ph 54232284) and Tylden ( ph 54248244)

Free school buses are an option for children who reside some distance from the schools


Kyneton Sports and Aquatic Centre:

Kyneton’s recently developed Sports & Aquatic Centre is open 7 days a week and houses an 8 lanes 25m indoor heated swimming pool, squash courts, fitness centre, and courts on which basketball, netball, indoor cricket and badminton are played. Kyneton’s tennis courts, four of which have lights are adjacent to the Centre.

Learn to Swim Programs

The Sports & Aquatic Centre offers learn to swim programs for all ages and levels:

Infant Program: provides for children as young as 6 months to develop valuable water play and water awareness skills.

Pre-School Program: to assist children aged 3 to 5 years in developing water awareness, safety and swimming skills.

Primary Program; caters for primary school age who want to develop water awareness, safety and swimming skills.

Intensive Swim Program: an intensive 5 day program designed for swimmers of all levels to enhance their current swimming and water safety skills.

Preparation for competition and coached training squads is instructed through the pre-squad and junior squad groups.



Kyneton Little Athletics attracts scores of girls and boys in age ranges from U6 to U15 to the Kyneton Showgrounds on Saturday mornings from mid October onwards. Contact Michael Colverd  0418 334 498.


The Kyneton Basketball Association whose home is at the Kyneton Sports and Aquatic Centre has Junior Boys and Girls competitions at for ages ranging from under 10 to under 18. Representative teams also compete in championships about the State. Contact John Robson 0427 506 179.



Junior cyclists are welcome in the Macedon Ranges Cycling Club whose clubrooms are in Kyneton. Competition track and road cycling are undertaken by the Club. Kyneton has its own velodrome. Club contact is Chris Karopoulus 0404 854 100



There are 5 junior football clubs in the District North Kyneton, South Kyneton, Malmsbury, Tylden and Trentham. There are several different age levels and teams are open to both boys and girls.



In 2012 Junior Girls netball will be played on Monday evenings 4-6.30pm at the Kyneton Sports and Aquatic Centre. Association Secretary is Diedre Tunzi ph 0408 343 438



The Kyneton District Soccer Club fields mixed boys & girls teams in U16, U15, U14, U13, U12 and U6-10 SmallSided Games in addition to 2 mens, a womens and a boys U18 team. Home base for the team is Barkly Square in Beauchamp St. Enquiries . Web: .


Kyneton & District Tennis Club Courts are located in Victoria St next to the Sports and Aquatic Centre. Four of the 12 courts are mod grass and have lights.

The Kyneton Library, next to Kyneton Primary School at 3 Baynton St and adjacent to the Mechanics Reserve, has an excellent range of children’s books and resources. Hours: 9.30-5pm Mo, Tu, We, Fr. Th 9.30-6pm & Sat 9.30-12.30pm. ph 54221365.


As well as the school and town libraries Aesop’s Attic at 70 High St ( ph 54226059) has an extensive range of children’s books.


Cubs, Joeys and Scouts

Churches’ Children’s Activities:

The local churches offer a variety of activities for children and young people.



Two Dance schools that teach all forms of dance – classical ballet, jazz/funk, tap, hip hop, contemporary and Angelina ballerina pre-primary ballet operate in Kyneton and District Mon – Sat: Steps Studios 0405 846 668  and Starz Dance Centre 0458 333 761



The local primary and secondary schools offer extensive instrumental music tuition and private tuition either through InstrAmental Music Store at 33 High St or through individual private tutors is available for most instruments and also voice. The Kyneton Municipal Band also offers instrument tuition to children who join it

Macedon Ranges Resonance String Orchestra, allows accomplished young string musicians to develop their skills.


Music Provisions: InstrAmental Music ( ph 54221083) sells a broad range of instruments and accessories and hosts intrumetalal music tuition.


Occasional Activities for Children

Every year there are many one off activities in which children can participate or observe. These include the Kyneton Agricultural Show, Kyneton Idol, the Kyneton Daffodil and Arts Festival, the Kyneton Teddy Bears’ Picnic, special holiday activities and performances for children in the Kyneton Town Hall.


Pony Club

Kyneton Pony Club ph 54232476 has its activity day on the first Sunday of the month at Rollinson Reserve 180 Redesdale Rd Kyneton. Activities include Cross Country, dressage, Showjumping, Games, grooming, Camps and Certificates.


The Skate Park: is adjacent to the bottom oval of the Showgrounds Beauchamp St.
